Never Enough Snacks: Zero Waste Grazing While on the Road

I’m serious about snacks. I’ll start packing my snack bag a week out from flying, whereas the suitcase gets thrown together possibly hours before taking flight.
Eating well in a new place can be tricky, and often comes with a whole lot more packaging waste. But not so in our lovely little food haven of Byron Bay. A year-round growing season means fresh and locally sourced fruit and veggies.

And community consensus about the importance of reducing food-packaging waste means we have several stellar options for bulk buying food in BYO containers, be they re-purposed bags, old salsa jars, or the prettiest option in plastic-free packaging, these sets of matching glass and bamboo containers from local zero-waste connoisseurs Seed & Sprout.

After a surf at The Pass, we hit the bulk shop with post-surf ravenousness and inadvertently went home with enough snacks to last the rest of the month. We scored all the ingredients for the most delicious popcorn ever (slathered in olive oil, nutritional yeast and salt), raw chocolate covered almonds, dates, and because we’re absolute suckers, organic activated kombucha mixed nuts (when in Byron Bay).

We made popcorn over an open fire and relished in the sweetness of snacks and doing not much, together.

After surfing, we hit up the local bulk bin shop for snacks. Don't forget to bring your own containers!

Popcorn recipe: Add popcorn in a pot with enough olive oil to lightly coat and shake it around. Put on the lid and place the pot over the flame. Listen for the popcorn to start popping and shake it around to help it cook evenly. You'll be able to tell it's done when the popping slows to about 5 seconds between pops. Sprinkle with toppings! We drizzled a little olive oil, nutritional yeast, and sea salt.
