Growing up on the idyllic Brazilian island of Ilhabela (Google it and week) was more than enough to keep Amanda Chinchelli in close proximity to the beach for life. Now a resident of Southern California, Chinchelli, founder and designer of swimwear line Seea, takes inspiration from retro style of longboarding culture — her surfing mode of choice. “I live by a very historical longboarding spot,” says Chinchelli of San Onofre State Beach, “and I wanted to give back to the roots of surfing.” The line ranges from all-in-one suits that combine boy-shorts and rash guards to two-piece bikinis, all of which were designed to wear under a wetsuit). “You don’t want to have to worry about who’s looking when you’re spinning on the board,” Chinchelli says with a laugh. The vintage fashion elevates Seea from mere athletic gear: The Malibu suit features horizontal stripes and playsuit evokes ‘60s French style. “I design with function in mind first, says Chinchelli, “but I like crazy colors and prints, too.” MALLORY RICE.
